P1404 Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) Details - 2001 Chevy Venture

General Description: P1404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Closed Position Performance
Detailed Description:
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve pintle position input to check that the valve responds properly to commands. When the ignition switch is turned ON, the PCM "learns" the EGR learned minimum position. The PCM compares this position to the EGR position sensor when the EGR valve is commanded closed. If the EGR position sensor indicates that the EGR valve is still open when the PCM is commanding the EGR valve closed, this diagnostic trouble code (DTC - P1404) will set.

Conditions for this code to set:
The vehicle must be driven, the EGR position sensor is 0.2 volts greater than the EGR learned minimum position when the desired EGR position is commanded to 0 percent and this condition must be present twice.

What to check for:
Look for excessive deposits on the EGR valve pintle or seat by removing the EGR valve and check for deposits that may interfere with the EGR valve pintle extending completely or cause the pintle to stick. If the problem is intermittent, check for Intermittent Conditions, such as wiring or connection problems.

Location of main sensor:
The EGR valve is located at the left rear of the engine, near the throttle body.

Notes: Always check for loose wiring or connections, especially if this code is intermittent.

Important Note: Just because a code names a particular sensor or component, it does not mean that sensor or component is bad. Proper diagnostic procedures must always be performed to find the root cause of the problem
